Mail Bonding Jump to Big 12 has been tough on Dana

Each week, Sporting News college football writer Matt Hayes answers readers questions in his Mail Bonding column:Q: What do you think of the addition of Tom Bradley to the West Virginia staff? Is that enough to save (Dana) Holgorsens job? Marshall, Richmond, VirginiaHayes: Holgorsens biggest problem is hes the coach presiding over the move to the Big 12, a significant jump in competition from the Big East.MORE: | | | It also didnt help that he won the Big East in Year 1 at WVU, and then scored 70 points on Clemson in the Orange Bowl . Expectations built from that one season have overshadowed the difficulty of the conference move.Look at Utah or TCU: both have Jeff Heath Jersey struggled in their move to Power 5 conferences. The difference is Utes coach Kyle Whittingham and Frogs coach Gary Patterson have capital built from extended succe sful seasons at those schools. Holgo does not. That background has to be mentioned first in any conversation about saving Holgos job. The last two years in Morgantown have been a bad look, and like it or not fair or not that falls on Holgo. Bradley and his three-plus decades of experience as a highly succe sful Penn State defensive a sistant, and at the very least, hell have a wayward defense in the right spot at the right time (a huge problem the last two seasons). The problem is, WVU still doesnt have the personnel on defense to consistently stop the spread offenses of the Big 12. That means high-scoring, last team with the ball wins games a tough way to survive and win enough to keep your job.KILLING BIG TEN EASTQ: While on the subject of competitive balance with the SEC and their lame decision about staying at eight games, can you explain to me how the Big Ten came up with its competitive balance with the new division structure? Are they trying to kill off the good teams in the East Division? Frank G., Reading, PennsylvaniaHayes: I was for anything that eliminated the pompously polarizing Legends and Leaders division names. But get this: those divisions were a spectacular fail in name alone. The idea of competitive balance within the divisions was brilliant. But once the league switched to geographical names, the geographical split became nece sary and that led to the four strongest brands (Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State and Ohio State) in the East Division. And yes, another failure.Any way you look at it, there are two teams in the West Division Nebraska and Wisconsin with the ability to consistently compete for a championship. As much as the good folks in Iowa would like to Jordan Miller Jersey think differently, history shows this. But its more than just what happens from September to November; its where the programs are built. Penn State will eventually return to elite form once the fallout from NCAA sanctions subside, and that will leave four elite, recruiting machines in the East.Who in the West Nebraska, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Northwestern, Purdue scares anyone in the Big Ten (or anyone else, for that matter) on the recruiting trail? Thats where programs are built and championships are won and where the imbalance becomes the biggest i sue for future growth. If the elite four teams were separated (Ohio State and Michigan in one division; Michigan State and Penn State in another) and if Nebraska and Wisconsin were separated, too one of those foundational six would play in the biggest game of all a majority of the time.Look at the SEC: the big six in the SEC is Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Florida, LSU and Tenne see. They were split evenly from Day 1, and in 22 years of the SEC Championship Game which is now clearly the biggest and best game on the regular season schedule every season 38 of the 44 teams who have played in the Austin Reiter Jersey game have come from the big six.Look at the map. Auburn, Alabama, is east of Nashville (Vanderbilt) and Columbia, Mi souri, and the world hasnt ended. The Big Ten doesnt have a problem in brand building (hello, cash cow Big Ten Network); it does, however, have a problem with the way things will shake out year after year in the league race, where three of its top four teams wont be playing in the league championship every season. If Jameis Winston was any other football player at FSU, he would have been disciplined. (AP Photo)WHAT ABOUT WINSTON?Q: I cant see this whole Jameis Winston thing ending well. Do you think he makes it to next January without another incident before leaving for the NFL? Tina Davis, MiamiHayes: Short answer, yes. Long answer: theres a lot of green left in that putt.FSU coach Jimbo Fisher is now officially in the same position Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin was in last season with star QB Johnny Manziel: doing everything he can to keep Winston on the field and out of the headlines until the last game of the season. And that includes different rules for different players.Fisher said earlier this week at the ACC spring meetings that he would not punish Winston . That incident was the fourth such i sue Winston has dealt with since arriving in Tallaha see (including stealing extra soda at a Burger King, shooting a B-B gun at windows and being investigated for sexual a sault).Any way you look at the incidents, theyre all poor decisions from a Morten Andersen Jersey player in a prominent position not only on his team but in his university. A player whose father told USA Today that his son should be watched 24/7 by FSU officials because of his celebrity status. So when the fourth example of bad decision-making rolls around, the reaction is not following up with another bad decision of not punishing Winston. Its sitting him for the season opener and telling him hes not bigger than any other player on the team.Because if this were any other player at FSU, hed have been disciplined. That four-day baseball suspension was laughable because it was four days, and because it wasnt in the sport that matters most to Winston.Youre not sending a me sage of discipline, youre sending the idea that Winston is more important than any other player and student at FSU. Thats a dangerous place to be.SLEEPER PICKSQ: How about some sleeper picks in the BCS conferences, or whatever theyre calling them now? I think my (Mi souri) Tigers have to be one. Katie, Jefferson City, Mi souriHayes: Well call them the Power 5, and once they get their own governance rules granted by the NCAA, well give them a fancier name. Now, the sleepers:Pac-12: Washington: The Huskies were close last season, and have the personnel to compete with Oregon and Stanford in the North Division. But that also means keeping knucklehead QB Cyler Nick Vannett Jersey Miles out of trouble.Big Ten: The Hawkeyes return some key starters (including rising QB Jake Rudock)
