The ODI clash between India and England at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, in February 2025, was a thrilling encounter that kept cricket fans on the edge of their seats. With both teams boasting world-class players, this match lived up to its expectations as a contest full of skill, strategy, and drama. The second ODI of the series saw England bat first after winning the toss, setting a challenging total, which India chased down in a nail-biting finish to win by 4 wickets.

England's Innings: Building a Competitive Total

On a humid afternoon in Kolkata, England decided to bat first, with openers Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow tasked with providing a solid start. Buttler, the England captain, looked in excellent form, playing shots all around the ground with confidence. He paced his innings carefully, scoring 78 runs off 85 balls, including seven boundaries and two sixes. Buttler's partnership with Bairstow was crucial, as the pair took England to a strong position at 105/1 by the 20th over.

Bairstow, on the other hand, was more watchful but equally effective. He played a steady knock of 55 runs off 62 balls, finding the gaps consistently and keeping the scoreboard ticking. However, just when England seemed poised to accelerate, both openers were dismissed in quick succession. Bairstow fell to a well-directed bouncer from Mohammed Siraj, caught behind, while Buttler was dismissed by Jasprit Bumrah, who trapped him LBW.

Following the dismissals of their openers, England’s middle order struggled to maintain the momentum. Joe Root, a vital figure in the lineup, contributed with a patient 47 runs off 53 balls but could not go on to make a big score. The pressure built as England lost wickets at regular intervals. Harry Brook (35) and Ben Stokes (29) did offer resistance, but they could not consolidate the innings in the middle overs.

India's bowlers, led by Bumrah’s brilliant 3/52 and Siraj’s 2/48, kept the pressure on, preventing England from building any significant partnerships. The spin duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav also played key roles, keeping the scoring rate in check while picking up crucial wickets. England’s innings ended at 287/9 in 50 overs, a competitive but achievable total for India.

India’s Chase: Composure and Resilience

India’s chase began solidly, with openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill starting cautiously but steadily. The pair took their time, rotating the strike and finding the boundaries when needed. Rohit, in particular, was at his best, playing an innings of 91 runs off 102 balls. His knock featured ten boundaries and one six, and he appeared to be in complete control throughout his time at the crease.

Gill (42 off 51 balls) supported his captain well, building a steady partnership. Together, the two put on 105 runs for the first wicket, providing a solid platform for the chase. However, just as the target seemed within reach, India lost both openers in quick succession. Rohit was dismissed trying to cut an Adil Rashid delivery, and Gill fell to a brilliant catch by the keeper off Mark Wood.

Virat Kohli, India’s most experienced player, then entered the fray, bringing stability to the innings. Kohli’s 65 off 68 balls was a perfect demonstration of his temperament, as he rotated the strike effortlessly and picked the right moments to accelerate. His presence at the crease kept the required run rate in check. However, with the required runs mounting, Kohli’s innings came to an end when he was dismissed by Rashid, caught at deep mid-wicket.

At 205/3, India still had a lot of work to do, and the match was delicately poised. Suryakumar Yadav’s quick 27 runs off 21 balls provided the much-needed acceleration. Alongside Hardik Pandya (22 off 19 balls), they ensured India remained on course for the target. However, it was the calm composure of Ravindra Jadeja and KL Rahul that took India to victory. Jadeja, unbeaten on 24*, and Rahul, who finished on 11*, guided India home with 8 balls to spare, as India successfully chased down the target of 288, reaching 291/6.

Key Performances:

  • Jasprit Bumrah (3/52) was the standout bowler for India, picking up key wickets at crucial times and maintaining a tight line throughout the innings.

  • Rohit Sharma’s knock of 91 runs was pivotal in anchoring the chase and giving India a solid foundation.

  • Adil Rashid (1/62) was England’s most economical bowler, taking a crucial wicket of Virat Kohli but couldn’t stop India’s chase.

  • Virat Kohli (65) played a composed innings, anchoring the middle order as India steered toward the target.

Conclusion: A Hard-Fought Contest

This ODI match between India and England was a thrilling display of skill and determination from both teams. England’s competitive total, built on solid contributions from Buttler and Bairstow, was almost enough to put India under pressure. However, India’s response, led by Rohit Sharma’s composed knock and Virat Kohli’s ability to anchor the innings, proved to be just enough. The match highlighted India’s strength in handling pressure and showcased their depth in batting.

As India successfully chased down 288, the win was a testament to their balanced side and their ability to perform under pressure. England, though not victorious, showed that they remain a formidable opponent, setting the stage for an exciting remainder of the series.
