The suit was filed on Monday by 10 players, which quickly turned into 200, one of the lawyers working on the case .The bulk of the suit concerned the league's lack of action until 2011, when it banned checks to the head. Though the league started its concu sion program in 1997, the 10 plaintiffs say that was A) too late and B) didn't produce change quickly enough.Is the NHL doing enough now? One of the most important things moving forward is that players speak up, both during games and after, and that their concerns are taken seriously. It's a tough balance to strike, though; pro athletes, generally, aren't completely forthcoming about injuries, and that goes double for hockey players. I haven't read that, so I'm not exactly in tune with exactly what that is all about. I'm not surprised at all after the NFL settled with their players that there was a group coming (with a lawsuit). We just had our union meeting in St. Louis when we were there. We had (executive director) Don Fehr speak to us, and then we had a concu sion specialist speak to us for 30 minutes about it. They can educate you all you want.I think one of the major problems is that you see guys that do get hit in the head, and they're stubborn about it. If guys aren't speaking up about it, and saying they have symptoms, there's only so much people on the other side can do for you.I think it's gotten a lot better since I've been in the league, and I think a lot of it is on the players to speak up when they're not feeling normal.That's not the question of the lawsuitthose claims are more complex, and time will tell whether they hold legal merit.
