It is important for a good leader to be responsible, attainable and communicative. He/she should be knowledgeable and have a well-developed critical and strategic thinking. A leader should be in the good terms with the people and always plan his/her actions. Not of a less importance for a leader is to be intelligent, analytical, objective, fair and self-confident.
In healthcare organizations one can distinguish formal and informal leadership. Formal leadership is characterized by a limitation in the ability to run. Informal leadership is characterized by the ability to risk, by creativity and strategic thinking. Informal and formal leadership concepts can function within a company. Formal leadership is an official position and it is affirmative, authoritative and coercive, while informal leader is knowledgeable and experienced.
At the present time, it is important for nursing professionals to stay aware of political actions. Nursing organizations have links with the political development and healthcare protection itself is one of the policies of the state. Nurse leaders should be informed about the political activity of a state. Healthcare system deals with many problems that can be solved with the help of political reforms. Nurse leaders should constantly practice themselves and be knowledgeable in politics and policy not only of their country, but also in the politics and policy of the world.
