Ethereum has experienced a major evolution, transitioning from the energy-intensive Proof-of-Work (PoW) model to a scalable and eco-friendly Proof-of-Stake (PoS) system with “The Merge” in September 2022. Once a mining giant, Ethereum eliminated traditional mining, replacing it with staking, where validators secure the network by staking their ETH.

PoW relied on high computational power and energy, leading to environmental concerns, while PoS reduced Ethereum's energy consumption by over 99%, making it greener and more sustainable.

Before “The Merge,” Ethereum mining rewarded participants for solving cryptographic puzzles, often requiring expensive hardware and energy costs. Miners could choose pool mining, solo mining, or cloud mining to participate.

However, with Ethereum 2.0, the focus shifted toward staking, significantly enhancing scalability and reducing environmental impact. Alternatives to Ethereum mining include staking ETH, mining other PoW cryptocurrencies like ETC, exploring DeFi opportunities, or engaging in liquid staking platforms.

Ethereum’s transformation marks a milestone in blockchain history, paving the way for faster transactions, better security, and greater accessibility. It signals the beginning of a greener, more inclusive blockchain future.
